Are Echo Owners Making Their Houses Smart?
Share

Lately we’ve thought a lot about Amazon Echo. Previously we looked at use cases, and at how many Echo devices each owner has. We saw owners say they use them primarily to listen to music and have at most a couple per household.

Here, we look at the other connected or smart devices that Echo owners have. We base this analysis on our survey of smart speaker owners. This includes a wide range of devices and gadgets: thermostats, electrical equipment like light bulbs, switches, and outlets, security systems including smoke detectors, cameras, and locks, garage door openers, and of course doorbells. We find that relatively few Echo owners have connected any of these smart devices, with doorbells the slightly surprising leader.

Doorbells are the most popular, with about one-third of Echo owners having one (Chart 1). Video cameras are next most popular, with a little less than one-quarter of owners having one. Just over one-third of Echo owners reporting have no connected devices at all.
