Is Walmart.com Catching Up to Amazon?
Not really.
Walmart.com was relatively late to the online shopping game. With its deep physical store infrastructure, Walmart continues to rely on its still enormous in-person shopping business, while leveraging its vast store count, consumer base, and vendor relationships to build a complementary online business.
One recent step in the process was introducing Walmart+ as an Amazon Prime alternative. Like Prime, Walmart+ offers free delivery benefits to its members. And like tracking Prime membership, one measure of how Walmart’s online efforts are going is assessing the number of Walmart+ members.
While only five years old, Walmart+ has grown to 25 million US members as of the July 2025 quarter (Chart 1). That is about one-eighth of the estimated 198 million US Amazon Prime members as of the June 2025 quarter. Note, CIRP estimates the number of shoppers who use an Amazon Prime or Walmart+ membership, not the number of paid subscribers, which is presumably lower.
