What’s the Most Expensive Item You’ve Bought From Amazon?

Yes, we do ask that question. By now we have about 20,000 responses dating back to 2013. The answers are fun and even revealing.

We actually ask, “What is the most expensive item you have ever bought from Amazon?”, and then we then ask how much that item cost.

Since 2013, more than a dozen subjects (about 0.05% of our sample) reported spending over $10,000 on that biggest purchase. Items included jewelry, furniture, home theaters, and even a car.

Needless to say, these items were not sitting in Amazon warehouses waiting for next day delivery. These purchases exemplify the powerful connection between Amazon’s retail brand and Amazon’s third-party sellers. Amazon is the trust agent and the third-party sellers are the merchants and inventory managers.

The $10,000+ club is the exception, of course. Still, 8% of Amazon shoppers report that they spent more than $1,000 on a single item at Amazon. Another 14% have spent over $500 (Chart 1).
