Amazon Grocery Shoppers Trail Walmart.com’s by a Lot

The idea that Walmart.com customers spend more annually than Amazon customers is an eye-opener. It highlights the difference in their businesses. Walmart is America’s largest grocery retailer and Amazon is far from it.

Amazon has tried many ways to become a grocery destination, including a series of delivery programs, opening its own physical grocery stores, and of course buying Whole Foods. How has this helped them? Based on annual spending, it seems grocery shopping does not drive significant overall spending at Amazon, at least not yet.

We’ve seen how about one-third of Amazon customers include grocery in their most recent order. The actual spending on grocery does not have a significant impact on the average Amazon customer annual spend metric, however.

Based on our most recent data from the June 2024 quarter, a US Amazon customer with grocery in their most recent order spends an average of a little more than $1,100 annually (Chart 1). An Amazon customer without grocery in their most recent order spends just above $900 per year. Walmart.com customers whose most recent order included grocery spend almost twice as much on an annual basis as those Amazon grocery shoppers.
