Amazon, the original online bookseller, quickly added categories in its zeal to become the “Everything Store”. Looking back nine years, as far back as our Amazon customer data goes, we see how it first moved to become a dominant electronics retailer. In recent years, apparel has displaced electronics as the leading (non-consumable) department.

In 2022, 22% of customers included apparel in their most recent order (Chart 1). Only 19% of customers included electronics.
